DATA AND METHODS The data for Northern Ireland for the years 1922-1978 were obtained from the Annual Reports of the Registrar General for Northern Ireland'. For the years 1913 to 1921 the data were obtained from the Second Annual Report of the Registrar General (Northern Ireland), 19232. Provisional data for 19793 were provided by the General Register Office for Northern Ireland. The data for the Republic of Ireland were obtained from the Central Statistics Office, Annual Reports on Vital Statistics 1960 to 19764, and Quarterly Reports on Births, Deaths and Marriages and on Certain Infectious Diseases 1977-19795. The data giving live births male and female and sex ratios for Northern Ireland for 19131978. and live births male and female and sex ratios for the Republic of Ireland for 1960-1979, and stillbirths male and female and sex ratios for Northern Ireland for 1961-1979, and on which this paper is based are available on request.'
